Mosquito bites an infected dog and ingests Microfilariae. Within 10-14 days the Micro- filariae develop into infective larvae inside the mosquito. Infected mosquito bites another dog, cat or other susceptible animal, and larvae enter through the bite wound. Within 6-7months infective larvae will develop into adult heartworm within the bloodstream and migrate to the heart. Heartworms may live in a dog for up to 7 years.
