12 | my pet magazine My horse is being bitten by insects and is very itchy. Is there anything I can use to help him? Biting insects like mites, mosquitoes, flies or midges can bite horses and irritate the skin. To repel the insects and stop them biting try using an insect repellent for horses like Brute Wipe on Insecticidal or Value Plus Fly Spray. If possible put a good quality rug and neck rug on the horse to create a barrier between the insects and the horses coat. Any insect bites can cause initial itching but they can also cause an allergic reaction resulting in severe itching and sometimes damage to the skin. Queensland Itch or Sweet Itch is a common itch caused by an allergic reaction to the saliva of biting insects and can prove to be difficult to combat. To soothe and heal any damaged skin you could try Heritage Downs Intensive Treatment or Heritage Downs Massage Oil. If the itching continues with no relief you should contact your veterinarian and seek advice as the horse may need an antihistamine injection. Riding for the Disabled provides horse riding and equestrian activities for people with disabilities throughout Australia at 94 riding centres. Like dogs, cats and other companion animals, horses provide amazing outcomes for people with disabilities. The movement of the horse is regular and three-dimensional, which aids in muscle development, balance and strength. For anyone who loves horses, patting, brushing and talking to your horse is judgement-free, helps lower blood pressure and is relaxing. Riders with social and language difficulties learn to talk to their horse first and then gain confidence to talk with other people. The wonderful work of RDA is supported through thousands of volunteers, some with horse experience and some who come to learn about horses. They provide all the training in a safe, supported environment. If you are interested in learning more about RDA or becoming a volunteer, visit their website for a centre near you www.rda.org.au - Article kindly provided by RDA tried+teed "Great product.
