When your cat all of a sudden stops using the litter
tray and making messes in the house it can leave
you frustrated and quite understandably annoyed.
The following are some common reasons as to
why they may have started going elsewhere and
not using their litter tray.
Dirty Litter - If the litter is dirty, wet or soiled,
some cats won't like it. Try and keep the litter
as clean as possible by removing any clumps,
wetness or faeces at least every two days.
Alternatively you could try a self cleaning litter tray
like the Scoop Free Self Cleaning Litter Box.
Smell of the Litter - Sometimes the smell of the
cat litter can be offensive and the cat may not like
it. It could be due to a perfume or scent in the
litter itself or a cleaning/disinfectant that was used
to clean the tray.
Different Litter - Changing the brand or type of
cat litter used is often cause for cats to stop using
the tray as they are not familiar with it, unsure if
they are meant to use it, or they just don't like it.
If you do want to change the type of litter used,
you should introduce it gradually by mixing the
new litter with the old litter, gradually increasing
the new litter each time.
Location of Tray - Cats generally like a quiet and
private spot for their tray. Try positioning the tray
to a new, quiet and private position.
Bad Experience - Sometimes the cat may have
experienced something that frightened them while
using the tray and they may not be comfortable
enough to go back. Try moving the tray to a new
quiet location.
Training Accidents - Training a cat or kitten to
use the litter tray can sometimes take time and
accidents occur. Often the best way to train them
is to lock the cat in a room with the litter tray
so they do not have to travel far to use it and
therefore getting an understanding that thats what
they are meant to do.
