One effective way to help your pets manage busy,
hectic or stressful periods in the home is to set up
a 'rest zone,' also known as a 'safe' or 'zen zone'.
Creating a dedicated rest zone for your dog is
essential for their well-being, providing them
a serene space to retreat from the hustle and
bustle of daily life.
What is a "Rest Zone"?
A rest zone is a place your pet can go to rest
or sleep to get away from the chaos of a busy
household, other pets, noises etc.
It may be a crate, den, bedroom, mat or other
quiet area. It should be an area where pets
can be quiet and calm – it is a no go zone for
humans, especially children.
Creating a Rest Zone
To begin setting up a rest zone for your pet,
ensure that the area is quiet and away from
high-traffic spots or any places where your dog
might be distracted by activity. It should also be
cool and comfortable, with options for shading,
air conditioning, or a natural breeze.
If you're designating a room or a section of your
home, make sure it includes a cosy and comfortable
resting place for your pet. For cats, it's important to
provide vertical space, such as shelves or cat trees,
to accommodate their climbing instincts.
Start by practising feeding your pet in their rest zone
and introducing puzzle toys or chew items to make
the area appealing and familiar. Over time, your pet
may naturally seek out their rest zone on their own,
recognizing it as their personal retreat.
Portable Rest Zones
If your pet feels anxious about being left alone or
separated from you, consider creating a portable rest
zone, such as a crate, that you can easily relocate to
stay close to them. This approach allows your pet to
remain near you while still having a designated space
to relax and feel secure, helping to ease their anxiety.
By setting up a rest zone now and ensuring it's a
familiar, comforting space for your pet, you'll help
them handle busy or stressful periods more smoothly,
giving them a serene retreat where they can always
find relaxation and peace.
