How will I know if my horse has
a problem with their teeth?
Some signs that your horse may have a dental
issue include:
Dribbling or excess saliva
Dropping food
Unwilling to eat or reduced appetite
Soaking feed in water
Drinking a lot while eating
Weight loss
Swollen face or jaw
Visible sores in the mouth
Problems when being ridden like fighting the
bit, hanging to one side or head tossing.
All horses should have regular dental check ups.
They should be checked every six months until
about five years of age, then yearly checkups or
if a problem arises. Teeth should be checked by
a qualified equine dentist or a veterinarian.

"Good product. Keeps my horses feet protected and in
good shape. Helps a lot especially in wet weather as a barrier.
Never had an access yet from change in the ground surfaces."

FAST FACT
The Mounted Police Units around Australia
make up a very important part of the Police
Force. They are able to serve and protect the
public in a different manner to police officers
on foot or in vehicles. The Mounted Police are
highly effective in a number of situations such as
crowd control, searches and patrols.
The horses of the Mounted Police Units are very
special and highly trained horses with important
jobs. Generally the horses themselves need to
be over 16 hands high (163cm tall at the wither)
and are usually brown, bay or black in colour.
Typically geldings are used because they are
generally easier to handle and work better with
other horses. The horses need to have a calm
but confident temperament that is not spooked
by loud noises, being touched, crowds or ever
changing new circumstances. The horse can be
any breed, including ex-racehorses that have
retired from the track.
A horse is usually assigned to one police officer
who cares from them, trains them and works
with them. Throughout the year the horses will
take a break from work and be sent out to a
paddock for a well deserved spell (holiday).
