Treating all horses with randomly chosen wormers every 6-8 weeks is no longer the recommended strategy for controlling the most important worms in the modern adult equine. It is important that worming horses be based on the needs of the individual horse. There are ways to keep your horses healthy and save money by worming less frequently and more strategically. Modern equine worming recommendations do not support rotating wormers or overtreating horses, but do support using the most effective products as little as possible, and as often as necessary. A basic strategic worming program* could be: – Worm every adult horse in spring and autumn – Perform worm egg counts to identify the 'high' and 'low' egg shedders within your herd. – At other times of year, worm only the horses passing most eggs in their faeces . Equest Plus Tape ® is the only wormer that kills the most dangerous stage of the most common type of worm in a single dose, namely the encysted stage of the small strongyle. Other wormers are not able to kill the developing larvae of this type of worm when they are hidden in the gut wall of the horse. This means that only Equest Plus Tape kills what counts and keeps your horse safer for longer. Choose Equest Plus Tape for your horse every Autumn and every Spring. With resistance starting to emerge in Australian horse worms, it is important to think about worming from a more scientific perspective. The aim of a worming programme should be to keep your horses disease free and to minimise infestation.
