Do foals need to be wormed?
If so, at what age should I start?
Foals are susceptible to worms due to their
immature immune system so therefore it is very
important to have a good worming regime.
The pregnant mare should be wormed 2 weeks
prior to foaling and then again as per the
recommended worming interval outlined on
the product.
Foals should first be wormed at 6 weeks of
age. Ensure that you are using a product that
provides good protection against ascarids, also
known as roundworms. Roundworms are most
commonly found in younger horses and can
lead to respiratory disease, diarrhoea, colic and
stunted growth.
A good worming program to follow for your
foal is worming during Spring and Summer
with Strategy T at 6 weeks of age, repeat
worming again 8-12 weeks later. Then during
the Autumn/Winter months worm with Equimax
Elevation repeating again 8-12 weeks time.
Using this rotational worming program will help
avoid resistance to active ingredients.

Ponies and Horses are both members of the
same species Equus caballus typically known
as Equines, although they are actually different.
The biggest misconception is that a pony is
just a young horse because they are smaller.
This is not the case; a pony will remain small
even once full maturity is reached. A pony is
an Equine that is smaller than 14.2 hands high
(or about four feet ten inches). Although this is
not always a determining factor as some horses
are smaller than 14.2hh and some ponies can
occasionally be larger.
Other differences between the two include the
fact that ponies are generally stockier in build
with proportionally shorter legs, heavier bone,
rounder barrel with shorter and thicker necks.
Ponies also tend to have much thicker coats,
manes and tails than horses. Ponies are
generally calmer in nature than their horse
counterparts and often more intelligent.

"Thank you from Kev the horse. The honey has kept
my horse's nasty gappy fetlock wound on track.
I credit it with keeping the wound infection free.
