Can you advise of a good
arthritis/joint treatment for
my horse as she is starting to
get older and seems to be a little
stiff in her joints?
There are a number of good supplements on
the market to improve and maintain joint health
for horses. A number of popular options have
proven to be effective such as 4CYTE Epiitalis
Forte Gel, Joint Guard Powder and Kohnke's
Own Redi-Flex.
These supplements help arthritis management
by increasing the production of healthy
cartilage, maintaining flexibility and by having
an anti-inflammatory effect. Other products
like Rose Hip Vital, Turmeric and Omega 3 Oil
supplements are all natural anti-inflammatories
that can help reduce arthritic pain. Also beneficial
might be something like Rapigel, which is not
a supplement as such but rather an external
liniment/rub that can be helpful if at times they
pull up a little tender or stiff in the joints.
Your vet will also have access to some
prescription medications which may also help in
conjunction with dietary supplementation.
BREEDBREAKDOWN
APPEARANCE: Very defined facial features,
wedge shaped head and concave/dished shape
profile. A broad forehead, large eyes, often with
a bulge in the forehead between the eyes. An
arch shaped neck, fine mane and the tail is held
in a high carriage position. Smaller sized horse
usually between 14.1 hands to 15.1 hands.
TEMPERAMENT: Considered a "hot blooded"
horse they are a highly spirited breed, very alert
and sensitive, sometimes making them a flighty
horse. They are intelligent horses and can learn
quickly, also meaning the can learn bad habits
easily. They need to be handled with respect
by a competent person.
AVERAGE LIFE SPAN: 25-30 years
USES: Arabs are built for speed and stamina
making them the ideal choice for endurance
and cross country events, however they are
suited to most forms of riding. They are often
seen in shows, circuses, movies and parades,
most likely because of their beauty and grace.
INTERESTING FACT: Arabian horses originated
in the deserts of Arabia and are one of the
oldest human-developed breeds; known for
their strength, resilience and toughness.
